What is a Bitumen Sprayer?

A Bitumen Sprayer (also known as a tar sprayer, asphalt distributor, or bitumen distributor) is road construction equipment used to uniformly spray bitumen on the road surface prior to laying hot mix asphalt or for surface dressing work. It ensures proper binding between road layers and improves the durability of pavements.

Main Components of a Bitumen Sprayer

  1. Bitumen Tank

    • Insulated tank with internal heating coils or a diesel burner to maintain bitumen temperature.

    • Capacity ranges from 2,000 to 10,000 liters depending on the model.

  2. Burner Unit

    • Diesel or LPG-powered burner to heat the bitumen to spraying temperature (around 150180C).

    • Thermostatically controlled for safe heating.

  3. Spray Bar

    • The key spraying mechanism.

    • Equipped with nozzles that ensure uniform spraying over the road surface.

    • Manually or hydraulically adjustable spray width.

  4. Bitumen Pump

    • High-pressure gear pump circulates bitumen from the tank to the spray bar.

    • Ensures consistent pressure and flow rate.

  5. Engine (Auxiliary or Truck Mounted)

    • Powers the pump and burner (if not powered by the truck's engine).

    • Usually diesel-powered.

  6. Air Compressor

    • Cleans the spray nozzles after use.

    • Ensures clog-free spraying and smooth operation.

  7. Control Panel

    • Allows control over spray pressure, temperature, and bar operation.

    • Includes sensors and gauges for monitoring system parameters.

  8. Hand Spray Nozzle (Optional)

    • For manual spraying in small or tricky areas like corners, patches, or sidewalks.

  9. Chassis/Truck or Trailer Mount

    • Mounted on a truck for mobility or on a trailer for towing.

Working Process

  1. Bitumen is loaded into the tank and heated to the required temperature.

  2. The spray bar is adjusted to the desired width.

  3. Bitumen pump is turned on to create pressure.

  4. Bitumen is sprayed uniformly through the nozzles as the vehicle moves forward.

  5. After spraying, nozzles are cleaned with compressed air or diesel.

Types of Bitumen Sprayers

Type Description Use Case
Truck-Mounted Sprayer Integrated on a truck chassis. Large highway and road projects.
Trolley-Mounted / Mini Sprayer Small capacity; mounted on trailers or trolleys. Patch work, narrow roads, small projects.

Typical Specifications

  • Tank Capacity: 2,000 to 10,000 liters

  • Spray Width: 2.4 to 4.5 meters (adjustable)

  • Nozzle Spacing: ~100150 mm

  • Heating Method: Direct/indirect diesel-fired burner

  • Spraying Pressure: ~0.5 to 2.0 bar

  • Pump Output: 300500 liters/min

Advantages of Bitumen Sprayer

  • Uniform bitumen application ensures strong bond between pavement layers.

  • Reduces bitumen wastage and manual labor.

  • Time-saving and cost-effective for large-scale works.

  • Ensures better quality control of tack coat application.

  • Portable and can be quickly deployed on-site
